World cruise halts in Cambodia as rising fuel costs force voyage suspension, stranding passengers and disrupting itineraries.
The luxury cruise ship Villa Vie Odyssey has paused its around-the-world voyage and suspended operations while docked in Cambodia, citing sharply increased fuel expenses that the company says it cannot absorb. The US-based operator reported that it is coordinating passenger disembarkation and arranging temporary accommodations for those affected.
Originally launched from Belfast in October 2024 for a continuous circumnavigation expected to last about 3.5 years, the nearly 200-metre (656 ft) vessel—capable of carrying up to 650 passengers—had already faced earlier delays and costly repairs before embarking on the extended journey.
The operator explained that global fuel prices have surged since the war in Iran began, dramatically increasing voyage costs. In parts of Asia the monthly fuel expenditure per cabin reportedly climbed to as much as $8,000 (about £6,000), compared with roughly $1,800 previously. The company implemented measures to reduce consumption—slowing the ship, increasing time in port and other efficiency steps—but said these actions did not compensate for the unprecedented rise in fuel costs.
“Passing the full increase on to residents is not a realistic solution,” the operator stated, adding that it will pursue a 60-day period of restructuring and recapitalisation while acknowledging that no specific outcome is guaranteed.
Bloomberg reported that about 200 passengers were on board when authorities ordered disembarkation in Cambodia. The voyage had been planned to visit nearly 150 countries over its 3.5-year duration. Cabins on the Villa Vie Odyssey are offered as permanent residences, with prices ranging from $120,000 to $440,000, and rental options starting at $3,500 per month.
The ship features multiple bars and restaurants, a pool deck and even a pickleball court, per the company website. With the suspension announced after more than 750 days at sea, the operator faces substantial logistical and financial challenges as it attempts to resolve the situation and assist those on board.
