ISTANBUL — A man identified as S.G., wanted internationally by Belgian judicial authorities on suspicion of drug trafficking and forming a criminal organisation, has been arrested in Istanbul’s Zeytinburnu district. Türkiye’s Ministry of Interior said the suspect was allegedly a senior figure in one of Belgium’s major cocaine trafficking operations.

According to the ministry, the arrest followed coordinated efforts by the Istanbul Police Department’s Narcotics Crime Unit and Intelligence Branch to locate and apprehend individuals wanted internationally.

The ministry alleged that S.G. headed an international drug trafficking network established in Belgium. Investigators reportedly linked the suspect to a shipment involving two tonnes of cocaine concealed in six tonnes of copper powder transported from Colombia.

The shipment was allegedly organised for delivery to Belgium, with further distribution to other European countries. Authorities also stated that the suspect had generated substantial proceeds from the operation, maintained connections in Colombia and procured chemicals used to separate cocaine from the material in which it had been concealed.

The Ministry of Interior commended the Istanbul Police Department and all personnel involved in the operation.
