Cyclone Arnab made landfall on the southeastern coast of India as a very severe cyclonic storm, bringing ferocious winds and torrential rain that forced nearly 100,000 people to evacuate in two states.

The India Meteorological Department reported winds of 125-135 kilometres per hour with gusts up to 150 kph as the system interacted with the land surface along the coasts between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam. Authorities ordered thousands to move inland or take shelter in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha while neighbouring Sri Lanka and Nepal issued weather warnings.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu emphasized that protecting every life was the foremost priority as preparations intensified. Officials said 50,000 people were instructed to move to safe areas in Andhra Pradesh and 48,000 in Odisha.

The weather bureau warned of total destruction of thatched houses, localized flooding, uprooting of power and communications poles, and widespread damage to standing crops. The state disaster management authority noted that more than 12 million people live along the cyclone’s expected path.

Authorities established over 2,000 cyclone shelters across 20 districts and sent emergency alerts to millions of mobile phones. More than 30,000 fishing boats were secured along the coast and nearly 1,100 medical teams were deployed to provide emergency assistance, according to Prakhar Jain of the Andhra Pradesh state disaster management authority.
