US advisor claims Moonshot AI extracted Anthropic’s model during access to Nvidia servers, prompting scrutiny into data security and corporate practices.
A White House science and technology adviser said Moonshot AI carried out a large-scale effort to extract capabilities from top US AI models by using a technique known as distillation, while also gaining access to restricted Nvidia servers to train its models, the adviser posted on social media on Wednesday.
Michael Kratsios stated that the US government has information indicating Moonshot AI distilled capabilities from Anthropic’s Fable AI to develop its K3 model. The adviser described the campaign as large scale and tied the distillation process to the development of Moonshot’s K3.
Moonshot’s K3 model attracted attention after its recent unveiling, with the company promoting the model as competitive with leading US technology. Kratsios also said Moonshot obtained access to restricted cutting-edge Nvidia servers during model training. The BBC has contacted Moonshot, Anthropic, the White House and Nvidia for comment.
The adviser’s post links two main claims from the same source: that Moonshot performed distillation on Anthropic’s Fable AI and that Moonshot accessed restricted Nvidia hardware for training. Both assertions were presented by Michael Kratsios on social media and prompted follow-up requests for comment to the companies mentioned.
