Mehmet Arabacı, President of the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK), highlighted the importance of administrative data and digital technologies in population and housing censuses at the opening of a regional workshop held in Ankara.
The Regional Workshop on the Use of Administrative Data in the 2030 Round of Population and Housing Censuses was held in Ankara on October 19, 2026. The event was organized by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), with contributions from the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP).
Speaking at the opening session, TÜİK President Mehmet Arabacı emphasized the importance of population and housing censuses in formulating public policies, allocating resources efficiently, and monitoring development goals.
Administrative Data Improves Statistical Efficiency
Arabacı stated that the use of administrative data and digital technologies increases efficiency in statistical production and contributes to the generation of more up-to-date data.
Emphasizing the importance of data quality and inter-institutional coordination in the effective use of administrative data, Arabacı also discussed TÜİK’s experience in using administrative records for population statistics.
He noted that the experience gained from the 2021 Population and Housing Census would be shared with participating countries during the workshop.
Preparations for the 2030 Census Discussed
Arabacı stated that the Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2023 and extended until 2030 provides an important foundation for joint initiatives.
The workshop is expected to facilitate the exchange of national experiences in using administrative data ahead of the 2030 Round of Population and Housing Censuses, assess the challenges encountered, and discuss approaches to strengthening statistical capacity.
