Guernsey’s Overseas Aid & Development Commission has approved £50,000 in support to ShelterBox’s response team for communities in Nepal affected by deadly flash flooding near the Tibet border on 26 August, the commission announced.

More than 1,300 people have been reported dead after flooding struck close to the Tibet border. The funding will be used to provide emergency shelter and essential household items to families who lost homes and possessions.

Commission president Jennifer Strachan said the government recognised the scale of human suffering and was pleased to back ShelterBox’s emergency response. Alex Orme, head of programme funding at ShelterBox, said the donation would fund lifesaving aid such as blankets, sleeping mats, solar lights and kitchen sets to help families protect themselves from the elements as they begin rebuilding.
