Russian leader praises Elon Musk as a genius and discusses satellite coordination between Russia and private space efforts, highlighting strategic tech ties.
Russian President Vladimir Putin praised Elon Musk as a “real genius” while saying the two are in close contact about satellite technology during the Russia-Africa Summit in Moscow. Putin discussed Russia’s satellite internet project Rassvet and said maintaining contact with Musk helps prevent orbital interference between Rassvet and Starlink satellites.
Putin said cooperation on satellite matters continued despite political questions and that both sides valued mutual efforts. Starlink, operated by SpaceX, has launched roughly 13,000 satellites according to the company, while online trackers show only a couple of dozen Rassvet satellites in orbit.
The Russian Embassy in South Africa described Rassvet as “Russia’s Starlink alternative” and said it marks only the country’s first steps in this field. The comments came amid signs of closer ties between the US and Russia even as it approaches five years since Putin’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Putin’s remarks noted the importance of contact with Musk so the two satellite systems do not interfere in orbit. The article also referenced recent events that include Starlink connectivity problems affecting Ukraine and a US citizen released from Russian custody following waivers of certain sanctions by US President Donald Trump.
Putin’s public praise of Elon Musk and acknowledgment of close contact signals a practical bilateral engagement on space technology despite broader geopolitical tensions. The emphasis on preventing orbital interference highlights a shared operational concern that transcends political disputes. Statements from the Russian Embassy framing Rassvet as a nascent alternative to Starlink underline Russia’s intent to develop independent satellite internet capabilities while still coordinating to avoid collisions or signal conflicts.
