Allegations of corruption involving stock markets and investment funds have become a subject of discussion from the mosque pulpit. In a striking sermon, an imam criticized the alleged disappearance of billions of liras, drawing attention to the widening gap between financial misconduct and the daily struggles of ordinary citizens. “The bandits are no longer in the mountains. They are in our streets, our markets, our mosques and even standing shoulder to shoulder with you in prayer,” he said.

As allegations surrounding financial markets continue to fuel public debate in Türkiye, the imam used his sermon to address what he described as a growing crisis of morality and justice. He argued that the loss of ethical values has consequences far beyond individual wrongdoing, affecting society as a whole.

“What Happens When We Lose Justice Alongside Our Faith?”

Addressing developments in the stock market and investment fund sector, the imam condemned allegations involving billions of liras. Referring to the public expression “suit-and-tie thieves,” he argued that modern financial wrongdoing has taken on forms very different from traditional banditry.

“What happens when we lose our sense of justice along with our faith? We now see thieves operating through stock markets, investment funds and all sorts of financial schemes. They are taking billions of liras away, my dear brothers and sisters,” he said.

“The Bandits Are No Longer in the Mountains”

One of the most striking parts of the sermon was the imam’s comparison between traditional banditry and what he described as contemporary forms of theft. He warned that appearances and religious symbols should not be mistaken for genuine moral conduct.

“These bandits are no longer hiding in the mountains. They are in the streets, on the avenues and in the marketplaces. And it goes even further: they are in Mecca, they are in Medina, they are in mosques, they are in the prayer rows, standing shoulder to shoulder with you as you bow in worship. Such thieves have emerged, my dear brothers and sisters. This is modern-day theft.”

Retirees Struggle on 20,000 Liras While Families Wait for Aid

The imam also highlighted the hardship faced by people struggling to afford basic necessities. He contrasted allegations involving billions of liras with the reality of retirees trying to survive on monthly pensions of 20,000 liras.

He described witnessing men and women waiting for hours to receive food assistance. Some, he said, had to return two or three times just to obtain a two-liter bottle of cooking oil.

“How will you answer for the burden and the sins of these people?” he asked, directing his criticism at those he believes bear responsibility for the situation.

“Faith Is Not Proven by a Headscarf or a Beard”

Turning to the relationship between religious appearance and personal integrity, the imam stressed that outward symbols of faith do not automatically reflect honesty or moral character.

He spoke emotionally about witnessing poverty firsthand, explaining that his position at the mosque allowed him to see the struggles of disadvantaged people more closely.

“My heart aches. I see the poor here, and you see them in your own communities. Because we serve as imams and spend our time in mosques, we have more opportunities to encounter these people and witness their suffering. It breaks our hearts, my dear brothers and sisters.”

He concluded this part of his sermon with a pointed warning:

“When faith does not reach the heart, outward appearances mean nothing, my dear brothers and sisters. Wearing a headscarf or growing a beard does not, by itself, demonstrate genuine faith.”

The sermon has brought renewed attention to allegations of financial misconduct, economic inequality, the struggles of retirees and the growing debate over the relationship between religious values and personal accountability in Türkiye.

Editor’s Note:

The imam’s remarks reflect growing public frustration over allegations of financial misconduct, economic inequality and the difficulties faced by low-income households in Türkiye. His sermon raises a broader question about the relationship between religious values, social responsibility and justice, emphasizing that outward displays of faith cannot replace honesty, integrity and accountability. The speaker’s identity, the mosque and the date of the sermon have not been independently established. Allegations of financial wrongdoing referenced in the sermon should therefore be understood as the speaker’s criticism, not as judicially established findings.
