A professional summary of the deadly elementary school shooting: the teenage gunman was killed after the attack; details and community response follow.
A 16-year-old attacker fatally shot three children and a teacher at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, on Thursday afternoon before a community member shot and killed the suspect.
Local authorities reported that the suspect forced his way into the school by shooting at locked doors. Bend Police Department spokeswoman Sheila Miller said law enforcement received the first call about shots fired into a car, followed minutes later by multiple 911 calls reporting an active shooter at the school.
Police identified the shooter as a local 16-year-old boy but declined to provide further details pending the ongoing investigation. Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz stated that a community member who had followed the suspect into the school engaged and fatally shot him shortly after officers arrived.
The victims who died were three children aged five, eight and 11, and a 54-year-old teacher was taken to hospital in critical condition along with a seven-year-old child. Bend-La Pine Schools Superintendent Steven Cook described the community as stunned and heartbroken by the tragedy.
The incident underscores a rapid escalation from an initial shooting into a vehicle to an active shooter situation inside a school, prompting immediate community and law enforcement response. A community member’s intervention ended the attack within minutes of law enforcement arrival, leaving unanswered questions about motive and the suspect’s connection to the school as authorities continue their investigation.
