Unemployment rose slightly to 4.2% in September as American employers paused hiring.
The US labour market weakened sharply in September, with employers adding just 29,000 jobs in the final employment report before the midterm elections.
Hiring remained broadly unchanged across major sectors, including technology and retail, while job creation fell substantially from August, according to figures released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).
The unemployment rate also edged higher, rising from 4.1% in August to 4.2% in September.
The latest figures point to a cooling US economy and are expected to reduce the likelihood of the Federal Reserve pursuing a series of additional interest rate increases.
September’s 29,000 new jobs marked a significant slowdown from August, when revised BLS figures showed that employers had added 133,000 positions.
