Teacher and bystander intervened to disarm a shooter in an elementary classroom, saving students and preventing further tragedy.
A shooting at Silver Rail Elementary in Bend resulted in the deaths of three children and a teacher after a 16-year-old former student opened fire in a special educational needs class. The incident unfolded when the suspect fired into the school through a window and entered the classroom, where he discharged as many as 15 rounds while armed with a shotgun and approximately 44 additional shotgun rounds.
Inside the classroom a teacher tackled the suspect and attempted to wrest the shotgun away, at one point throwing her mobile phone before engaging physically with him. During the struggle a bystander who had been driving past the school entered armed with a legally concealed .40-caliber pistol and fatally shot the suspect. Police said the suspect was killed at the scene.
Police identified two of the four victims as five-year-old Rhoam Summer and 25-year-old teacher Meghan Lambert. The families of the other two students, aged eight and 11, asked that their children’s names not be made public. Two others were injured: a 54-year-old teacher who remained hospitalized and a seven-year-old student who was in serious but stable condition.
Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz praised the courage of the teacher and the bystander, saying their actions likely prevented further loss of life. Police executed a search warrant at the suspect’s home and continued to investigate the suspect’s movements and how he acquired the weapon, noting that a clear motive had not been established.
The rapid intervention by school staff and a passing community member altered the course of a potentially larger massacre, underscoring the immediate impact of individual actions during active shootings. Identification of the victims and confirmation of the suspect’s prior attendance at the school highlight the personal dimensions of the incident for the affected community. Ongoing investigations into the suspect’s means of obtaining the firearm and his movements aim to clarify unanswered questions that remain central to understanding both motive and preventability.
