Rennes vs Olympiacos Europa League tie rescheduled earlier due to nationwide France strike, affecting travel and kickoff plans for fans and teams.
Rennes’ Europa League game against Olympiacos, initially scheduled for Thursday 5 November, has been brought forward by a day and will now kick off at 16:30 on Wednesday. UEFA said the change followed notification from French authorities that usual security arrangements could not be guaranteed on 5 November due to a planned general strike called by French unions.
The revised 16:30 kick-off was also intended to avoid overlap with Champions League fixtures scheduled at 18:45. The move has provoked anger among Rennes supporters, with some fans expressing frustration that a midweek 16:30 start is difficult for those who cannot rearrange work commitments.
Romain, a 33-year-old Rennes fan, told Euronews that although he could make arrangements with his employer to attend, many others would not be able to. On the social media platform X, another supporter, Quentin, said he was “fuming with rage” at having paid for a match he will not be able to attend, and numerous comments under the club’s announcement described the decision as a “disgrace” and a “lack of respect” towards fans.
French trade unions are calling for a general strike on 5 November as part of nationwide protests that began when students raised concerns about conditions in schools. Nationwide demonstrations were organised on Saturdays 17 and 24 October. “Act I” involved extensive damage and looting on the margins of the marches, while “Act II” a week later saw fewer clashes with authorised demonstrations largely taking place peacefully.
The unrest has already affected domestic fixtures, with the Professional Football League postponing several matches. The PSG versus Olympique Lyonnais match originally set for Sunday 25 October was moved to the following day. Further Ligue 1 scheduling changes have been announced this weekend as police and public authorities prepare for marches and demonstrations, including fixtures where OGC Nice will host Stade Rennais on Friday 30 October, Olympique Lyonnais will face Angers SCO on Sunday 1 November and FC Lorient will play Stade Brestois on Monday 2 November.
The postponement and rescheduling of the Rennes Olympiacos tie highlights how nationwide industrial action can directly disrupt international club fixtures when authorities judge security cannot be assured. Moving the kick-off aims to mitigate clashes with other major European matches and to accommodate public order constraints, but it also transfers logistical and financial burdens onto supporters and clubs.
