The dismissive and exclusionary attitude adopted by President toward Europe has weakened the Transatlantic alliance while pushing Europe to turn inward. This development has also triggered a series of secondary consequences. One of them is the strengthening of nationalist tendencies within Europe alongside the growing importance of the European Union.

As security fears increase, state reflexes are returning. Defense spending is rising, borders are regaining importance, and energy independence is becoming a strategic issue. While European integration deepens, discourses centered on national sovereignty are also gaining momentum at the same time.

This situation is creating a new European paradox:

Europe is being forced to become more state-centered in order to achieve greater unity.

Tensions surrounding migration, energy, and defense issues are likely to intensify further. On the one hand, Europe is compelled to act collectively; on the other hand, societies are becoming more protectionist due to identity-related concerns.

It appears that Europe’s future will be shaped not only by Russia or the United States, but also by its own internal social dynamics.
