Melania Trump negotiates a local ceasefire amid renewed overnight missile strikes on Kyiv, aiming to protect civilians and ease tensions.
A localized ceasefire negotiated by Melania Trump entered into force at 03:00 to allow an aid mission into the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky in southern Ukraine, where up to 2,000 people face shortages of food and medicine.
According to her office, Melania Trump led talks with civilian negotiators from Russia and Ukraine after meeting with UN officials who briefed her on the situation. The ceasefire aims to enable civilian officials from both sides to visit residents in their homes, assess needs and provide coordinated support and transportation for those wishing to evacuate.
Russian and Ukrainian negotiators as well as the militaries of both countries confirmed in separate statements that the ceasefire had begun. Newsmax has reported it was granted exclusive television access to accompany observers entering Oleshky on Thursday.
Minutes after 03:00, Kyiv was struck by multiple ballistic missile explosions and air alerts sounded across parts of the country. A strike damaged the Southern Bridge spanning the Dnipro River and disrupted metro-linked train services, Mayor Vitaly Klitschko said, adding that metro infrastructure on the bridge was damaged.
Late Monday attacks also damaged the grounds of a university in Kyiv, resulting in one fatality and ten injuries according to city officials. Mayor Vitaly Klitschko reported damage to medical facilities, including shattered windows in an intensive care unit and other wards with no reported casualties among patients or staff in those units.
Other reported impacts in Kyiv included damage to a non-residential building with one fatality near a supermarket and shattered windows at a university dormitory where a 20-year-old woman was wounded. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Russian ballistic missiles struck crowded civilian areas including the university grounds, Kyoto Park, the area near a metro station and residential buildings.
In Kharkiv, authorities reported that attacks late Monday killed two people and injured four. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reacted by stating that Russia demonstrated a desire to kill and continue waging war.
The negotiated local pause facilitates humanitarian access to a besieged population in Oleshky while separate strikes on Kyiv underscore ongoing threats to civilian infrastructure and lives. Confirmation of the ceasefire by both sides creates a narrow operational window for aid and possible evacuations, yet the near-simultaneous missile attacks on Kyiv and casualties reported in Kharkiv highlight the continued volatility and humanitarian risk across multiple fronts.
