French President Macron condemns foreign meddling after violent riots, pledging investigations and stronger measures to restore order and unity.
French President Emmanuel Macron, speaking in Doha, said foreign leaders had exploited the riots that erupted across France and had engaged in manipulation of information following the violence. He described unnamed leaders as “in campaign mode” and said fake videos generated by AI influenced their comments.
The unrest began on the fringe of cost-of-living protests and involved running battles between masked rioters and police, property damage and looting in Paris and other cities including Lyon, Marseille and Nice. The government acknowledged that police had “lost control” during the violence, which followed weeks of high school protests.
Nearly 150 people have been jailed and more than 800 brought before the courts since the riots, according to the source text. Macron said the authorities would be “uncompromising” toward “agitators from ultra-left fringe groups,” whom he blamed for much of the trouble.
Emmanuel Macron said there was no visible foreign interference in the events themselves but asserted there had been foreign manipulation of information afterwards. He criticized claims that France had been “invaded by hordes of migrants and Islamists” as completely false.
Benjamin Netanyahu told Israel’s i24 channel that France had experienced an “invasion of extremist Islam,” comments Macron had been told about after the Hamas attack on Israel on 7 October 2023, according to the source text. Donald Trump attributed the riots to mass immigration and urged France to “close your borders and take control.” Macron said some foreign leaders’ comments arose after exposure to manipulated material.
EU regulators are reportedly examining possible foreign online interference and disinformation campaigns tied to the French riots and similar unrest across the EU. Unnamed security officials told the Financial Times that pro-Russian and far-right accounts had spread violent videos to sow chaos, and Iran and Algeria were also suspected of involvement in some messaging.
Researchers cited in the source material linked pro-Kremlin influencers and a Russian operation known as Matryoshka to amplification of unrest and the spread of false narratives. BBC Verify reviewed multiple fake news videos that used near-identical branding to legitimate French outlets, while a viral AI-generated image allegedly showing an elderly couple robbed in Paris was traced to an obscure website and created using ChatGPT, according to the director of Infos-Israel.News.
The French government faces a dual challenge of restoring order on the streets and countering post-event information manipulation that intensified international reactions. Political leaders’ public comments, influenced by AI-generated or disinformation material, widened the diplomatic dimension of what began as domestic unrest. The involvement of accounts linked to known disinformation campaigns demonstrates how violent footage and fabricated imagery can be amplified to shape narratives beyond the immediate events.
