Police pursuit ends in dramatic crash as fleeing car plows through a cottage front room; residents and responders assess damage and safety.
An 80-year-old man and his wife were at home in Canal View, Chirk Bank, Shropshire when a car being pursued by North Wales Police smashed into the front room shortly before 22:00 GMT on Saturday, leaving the driver injured and the couple shaken but alive.
The vehicle failed to stop for officers, entered a road closure and struck a bridge before ending up inside the property, producing a loud impact that one neighbour likened to something falling from a plane.
Phil Barnett said he was sitting a few feet away on the other side of the wall when the car drove straight through the bay window upside down, and he saw a police officer dragging the driver out and placing him in handcuffs.
West Midlands Ambulance Service attended and took the driver, who suffered potentially serious injuries, to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.
Emergency crews removed the front bay window and surrounding brickwork, and the couple’s car was written off after being damaged in the incident. They are awaiting a structural engineer assessment before the vehicle can be removed.
The incident highlights the risks posed to bystanders and residents when a pursuit leads a vehicle off course and into built-up areas, resulting in significant property damage and potential injuries despite no fatalities in this case. The rapid response by police and ambulance services contained immediate harm to occupants, while the need for structural inspection underscores ongoing safety and recovery issues for the household.
