What happened: Former England midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has signed a one-year contract extension with Celtic in Glasgow, the club announced after his contributions helped secure the Scottish Premiership title and Scottish Cup last season.

The 32-year-old joined Celtic in February following a six-month period out of football after Besiktas terminated his contract. He scored a last-minute winner on his debut against Livingston and made 12 appearances for the club, seven as a substitute.

Manager Martin O’Neill, who was interim at the time and later appointed permanently, retained Oxlade-Chamberlain after the team’s revival under his guidance. Celtic clinched the title with a final-day victory over Heart of Midlothian and also lifted the Scottish Cup.

Oxlade-Chamberlain expressed his satisfaction with the new deal on Celtic’s official website, saying the season’s success was “incredible” and that he looked forward to returning to work with the squad ahead of the new campaign.

The midfielder began his career at Southampton and during his time at Liverpool won the Premier League, Champions League and FIFA Club World Cup. He won 35 caps for England.

Celtic’s squad will travel to Ireland this weekend, with their first pre-season match scheduled against Shelbourne on Tuesday, before joining the club’s training camp in Portugal.

The club has not announced any other signings so far this summer.
