Comedian Alan Carr will retain a concrete cow sculpture that failed to sell at an auction of unwanted items from Ayton Castle in the Scottish Borders, auctioneer Jim Railton said after the sale on Sunday.

The auction, held at Ayton Castle following public viewings on Friday and Saturday, offered hundreds of residual items that neither Carr nor the former owners wanted to keep. Railton reported a busy seven-and-a-half-hour session with only one lot unsold.

The concrete cow was part of a larger collection of folk-art sculptures known as the Branxton Cement Menagerie. Created by a retired joiner in the 1960s to entertain his disabled son, the menagerie grew into a well-known local attraction and was relocated to Ayton Castle in 2021 before the pieces were put up for auction.

Railton said the Branxton animals sold well overall, raising around £28,000 across their lots, though the cow attracted no bids. He added that Carr, who purchased Ayton Castle earlier this year, will keep the cow as an ornament and a reminder of the Branxton collection.

Among other sales at the event, the top price reached £24,000 for a five-seater Bentley Mulsanne. Railton estimated the entire sale would generate about £100,000 for the sellers who transferred the property to Carr.

Railton described the outcome as a strong result given the unknown market for some items, noting satisfaction with how the Branxton pieces performed and with the auction’s near-complete clearance.
