Liberal Party leader Zübeyir Gülabi criticizes the Türkiye–UK Strategic Partnership Agreement, citing lack of transparency and concerns over KAAN engine supply.
Liberal Party Chairman Zübeyir Gülabi made striking remarks regarding the “Türkiye–United Kingdom Strategic Partnership Agreement” signed on April 23, 2026, between Türkiye and the United Kingdom.
Gülabi criticized the government for previously accusing opposition figures and potential rivals of being aligned with foreign powers, while now entering into a strategic agreement with the UK. He emphasized that the agreement had not been presented to the public transparently and that its preparatory process was not openly discussed.
Highlighting that the deal includes provisions for engine supply for Türkiye’s national fighter jet project KAAN, Gülabi argued that such critical defense-related matters should be debated publicly in advance.
Clearly outlining his party’s stance, Gülabi stated: “If the Türkiye–UK strategic partnership strengthens freedoms, makes the economy more competitive, and increases transparency in governance, it should be supported. Otherwise, it is merely a new form of dependency.”
The statement has sparked renewed debate over Türkiye’s foreign policy direction and defense industry cooperation, with further public scrutiny of the agreement expected in the coming days.
