Typhoon Dujuan struck Japan’s eastern coast, bringing sustained winds of 126km/h and gusts up to 180km/h, disrupting transport and forcing closures across affected areas, officials said.

Air travel was interrupted with All Nippon Airways grounding flights to and from Hachijo Island as heavy rain and strong winds hit the island. Rail operator JR East suspended some services in Chiba prefecture, which hosts Narita Airport.

Japan’s Meteorological Agency warned of record rainfall through Tuesday and urged coastal residents to remain alert for landslides and flooding. The agency said rainfall could reach 350mm in the Tokai region, 300mm in the Kanto region and Izu Islands, and 200mm in Tohoku, and that low-lying areas faced severe flood risk.
