The Salt Has Spoiled!

Ears are deaf.
Eyes cannot see.
Tongues have fallen silent.
Nothing seems to make a difference.
Even the salt has spoiled!

We keep trying to explain things as best we can, but nothing seems to get through. The issue is no longer simply what those governing the country are doing; it is also what the people are willing to accept and what kind of life they have come to regard as acceptable for themselves.

When justice is undermined, castles are built on sand, the rule of law is eroded, and human dignity is trampled upon, yet a significant part of society begins to regard these things as an ordinary part of life, it is not enough to place the blame solely on those in power.

Governments do not operate entirely independently of society’s demands and objections.

If people do not genuinely demand freedom, justice, merit, the rule of law, and a life worthy of human dignity, the absence of these values gradually becomes the new normal.

One might say, “Silence does not mean consent.” Yet prolonged silence can deepen a culture of acceptance.

Still, we keep speaking out. Because we have a responsibility to ourselves, to others, and to the country we live in. But sometimes, a saying attributed to Muallim Naci comes to mind:

Ma’rifet iltifata tabidir,
Müşterisiz meta zayidir.

“Talent depends on recognition;
goods without buyers go to waste.”

When words are no longer valued, what more can you do? And that is what makes the situation truly frightening:

It is not that the salt has spoiled, but that no one is disturbed by the stench anymore—and people have grown accustomed to it.
