Risk-on rally: Bitcoin and gold rebound as yen volatility fuels market shifts, boosting risk assets and safe-haven flows.
Bitcoin and gold regained lost ground during Friday’s Asian session as risk appetite recovered after a brief period of caution driven by yen strength. Bitcoin climbed back into the low $82,000s after dipping below $81,000 overnight, while gold bounced from about $3,986 to roughly $4,020 per ounce.
The broader crypto market retraced earlier declines: ether, XRP, solana and dogecoin all moved higher alongside bitcoin. This recovery followed intense deleveraging — crypto futures liquidations reached approximately $435 million over the past 24 hours, with about $385 million coming from long positions, underscoring how leveraged bullish bets had amplified the prior move.
Major Asian equity indices, including Japan’s Nikkei and South Korea’s Kospi, recovered from session lows as sentiment steadied. U.S. Nasdaq futures nudged toward 29,190 after earlier weakness. The episode was triggered by a swift yen rally to roughly 156.07 per U.S. dollar — the strongest level since Sept. 18 — after hotter-than-expected Japanese inflation data raised prospects of additional Bank of Japan tightening.
The yen’s surge was fleeting, slipping back toward 157 per dollar as markets calmed. Given the yen’s historical role as a funding currency in carry trades, sharp yen swings can rapidly transmit to risk assets and derivative positioning, amplifying volatility across markets.
WTI oil held near $100 a barrel despite U.S. measures aimed at increasing fuel output. Sustained higher oil prices could add to global inflationary pressure, potentially weighing on risk assets. At the same time, spot bitcoin ETFs have not shown steady buying momentum; preliminary SoSoValue figures indicate U.S.-listed funds saw roughly $381 million in outflows on Thursday.
In sum, the rebound across bitcoin, gold and other risk assets was meaningful but remains fragile. Continued movements in FX, oil prices and ETF flows are likely to determine whether the recent rally can be sustained.
