Raigad floods devastate Ganesh idol production, washing away thousands and crippling local workshops; communities and artisans face severe losses.
Heavy monsoon rains in Raigad district destroyed approximately one million Ganesh idols and damaged about 3,000 workshops, workshop owners and association leaders told BBC Marathi, leaving sculptors without finished figures, moulds or raw materials weeks before Ganesh Chaturthi.
Artisans reported that more than 500 idols from a single workshop were ruined and that many lost moulds and supplies such as clay and plaster of Paris, making immediate reproduction impossible. Local officials have begun damage surveys and government financial assistance will follow after assessments, a government official told BBC Marathi.
Raigad typically produces up to eight million idols annually across some 20,000 workshops, providing seasonal work for about 150,000 people and generating roughly 3.5 billion rupees in sales. Sculptors said the downpour between 5 and 7 July — when the district received over 548mm of rain — overwhelmed their flood protections and submerged workshops.
Many soaked idols are unsellable and only those with minor damage may be dried and repaired. Some workshop owners hold insurance but said payouts are likely to be negligible compared with losses. Artisans described having to cancel orders, consider refunds or seek loans to cover customers’ advances and mounting costs.
Flooding damaged finished idols, moulds and raw materials across hundreds of workshops in Raigad, disrupting production ahead of Ganesh Chaturthi and prompting official damage assessments and promised financial assistance; sculptors face immediate supply shortfalls and significant economic loss while attempting salvage and repairs using local resources.
Artisans described attempts to source replacement idols from neighboring workshops but noted the scale of losses limits immediate recovery.
