Rescue teams are continuing their search for seven people believed to be trapped beneath the debris after a multi-storey block partially gave way in Nairobi. Video from the scene captures the lower level collapsing first and the upper structure subsequently crumbling, sending a dense cloud of dust across nearby streets.

Dozens of construction workers on the upper floors managed to escape with minimal injuries, but several shopkeepers who had opened premises on the ground levels are missing. Emergency crews and bystanders have been working to reach those thought to be trapped under piled concrete slabs.

Current rescue operations and challenges

Efforts to extract survivors have faced significant obstacles. Rescuers paused the use of heavy excavators amid concerns that mechanical digging could further restrict airflow to anyone still alive beneath the rubble. Teams have resorted to manual search techniques and cutting through metal to access potential voids.

Officials reported that 66 out of 67 construction workers present at the time escaped unhurt, while one sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The missing individuals are believed to have been located in shops already operating on the building’s lower floors.

Accountability and regulatory questions

Authorities and regulators are investigating why the structure collapsed and whether it complied with planning and safety requirements. Kenya’s National Construction Authority identified the developer, architect and structural engineer associated with the project but did not confirm whether routine inspections had been conducted prior to the incident.

Nairobi’s governor stated that the building lacked the necessary paperwork for lawful occupation and urged the national government to empower local officials to impose stronger penalties on developers who ignore approved plans and safety standards.

Context and wider concerns

Building failures are a recurring problem in Nairobi, with improper planning and substandard construction frequently cited as underlying causes. This collapse has renewed public debate about enforcement of building codes and the need for stricter oversight to prevent similar tragedies.
