Multiple injured in an Incheon supermarket stabbing; suspect detained. Police investigation underway as community reels from the attack.
The city of Incheon was shaken when a man launched a knife attack inside a Homeplus supermarket, leaving eight people wounded before bystanders and police subdued him. The assault took place on a Tuesday afternoon on an escalator, where the suspect had knives affixed to both hands.
Witnesses and shoppers intervened quickly, using chairs to block his route until officers arrived and detained the 59-year-old suspect. Authorities later found ten knives in his backpack and noted he was wearing an electronic monitoring ankle bracelet at the time of the incident.
All eight victims — six women and two men — were transported to hospital. One person experienced cardiac arrest, while others suffered wounds to their backs and shoulders. Building staff and emergency teams established an on-site emergency medical center on the first floor to triage and treat casualties.
Police reported the suspect had a prior conviction for attempted murder and served approximately four years in prison. Investigators are examining possible motives for the attack; as of now no clear motive has been announced.
The attack is notable in a country generally regarded as safe: South Korea’s 2024 homicide rate was reported at 1.6 per 100,000 people, considerably lower than many other developed regions. Nevertheless, a series of seemingly random violent incidents in 2023 — sometimes referred to in local discourse as “Mudjima” or “Don’t Ask Why” crimes — heightened public unease by involving strangers and lacking apparent motives.
Authorities continue to investigate the Incheon case while the community and officials assess security measures in public spaces after a separate fatal supermarket attack in April 2025 that killed a woman in her sixties.
