Germany Shooting That Killed Six Linked to Custody Dispute

GERMANY – Authorities have released new details about the deadly shooting that occurred near a youth services center in the town of Stade, located in Germany’s Lower Saxony state. Officials confirmed that six people lost their lives in the attack and said the incident stemmed from a child custody dispute.

According to the Lüneburg Police Department, five victims died at the scene, while a sixth succumbed to injuries after being taken to hospital. Several others were wounded, and officials warned that the death toll could still increase because some victims remain in critical condition.

Police have detained three individuals in connection with the case. Investigators identified one of them as the suspected gunman, while the other two were reportedly close associates of the suspect who were arrested after attempting to flee the area in a luxury vehicle.

Suspect Identified by Authorities

During a joint press briefing, Lower Saxony Interior Minister Daniela Behrens and senior police officials stated that the alleged attacker is a 45-year-old German citizen of Turkish descent who was born in Germany and resides in Hanover.

Investigators also confirmed that a firearm was recovered from the suspect’s vehicle. Police noted that the man had previously come to the attention of law enforcement for several offenses, including making threats.

Custody Conflict Believed to Be Motive

Police said the shooting was triggered by the suspect’s unsuccessful efforts to obtain custody of his three-month-old daughter.

Officials explained that the child’s mother and infant were staying at the youth services facility. The father had reportedly met with authorities on several occasions regarding custody but failed to secure a favorable outcome. On the day of the incident, another meeting ended without the result he wanted, leading to an argument with staff members.

Investigators believe the suspect then opened fire inside an office where employees of the center were gathered.

All Victims Were Youth Center Employees

Authorities confirmed that all six victims were employees of the youth services center, including four women and two men.

Police added that neither the suspect’s wife nor their three-month-old daughter was physically harmed during the attack. No further information regarding the couple’s relationship has been released.

The Lüneburg Police Department emphasized that investigators have found no evidence indicating a political or ideological motive. Instead, preliminary findings suggest the tragedy resulted from an escalating family custody conflict. The criminal investigation remains ongoing.
