Bitcoin climbed back above the $83,000 mark on Tuesday after an early dip, with the largest cryptocurrency briefly sliding to just under $81,000 before recovering, according to CoinDesk data. Ether recovered from five-day lows and XRP rose after touching a three-week trough, while tokens such as Zcash and Solana mirrored the broader rebound.

The early weakness in crypto coincided with a sharp selloff in Asian technology shares and softer U.S. tech futures, creating a risk-off environment that briefly pressured digital assets.

Asian tech rout and chip-sector pressure

South Korea’s KOSPI plunged over 6% intraday, dropping beneath the 6,000 level to its weakest point since late July. Chipmakers were among the hardest hit, with Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix each tumbling about 8% and extending multi-session losses. Investors cited concerns about elevated AI-related valuations and mounting competition from Chinese memory-chip producers as key drivers.

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng also weakened modestly, while Nasdaq futures extended recent declines, reflecting persistent nervousness across global tech markets.

Energy strength and inflation implications

Oil prices remained elevated, with WTI crude trading near $92.67 after rebounding from below $90, and Brent hovering around $106 a barrel following a three-day rally. Fresh attacks in Saudi Arabia and ongoing threats to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz have kept supply risks top of mind, supporting prices.

Higher oil costs can translate into greater inflationary pressure, which in turn bolsters the case for additional Federal Reserve rate hikes—an outcome that typically weighs on risk assets, including cryptocurrencies.

CPI, the dollar, and trader positioning

The Dollar Index held near 102.50, its strongest level since April of last year, maintaining pressure on speculative markets. Market participants are now focused on Thursday’s U.S. Consumer Price Index report as a potential catalyst for further moves in crypto and equities.

“With US inflation data approaching, I expect institutional investors to focus on adding protection through derivatives and hedging strategies rather than materially reducing their underlying exposure,” said Paul Howard, senior director at market-making firm Wincent. Institutions are likely to maintain core crypto positions while using derivatives to manage downside risks, treating cryptocurrencies as an asset class that can still deliver returns amid volatility.
