Turkish pro-opposition TV channel raided and forced off air; authorities halt broadcasts amid mounting political tensions and legal scrutiny.
Turkish police raided the headquarters of a pro-opposition TV channel in Istanbul on Wednesday morning, resulting in the channel being unable to continue live broadcasts and staff being prevented from entering the building.
Halk TV reported that a new manager had been appointed to run the channel during the intervention.
Turkish media reported that financial crimes police searched the building and that 17 arrest warrants were issued in connection with the raid tied to the channel’s owner.
The channel has been viewed by many as being close to the opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) and frequently criticizes President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s ruling AK Party.
In a separate development noted in the media, a Turkish court removed the CHP leadership from running the party in May, a move the opposition said strengthened Erdoğan’s hold on power.
Also reported was that Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, widely regarded as President Erdoğan’s major political rival, has been in prison for over a year on corruption accusations which he denies.
