Özgür Özel delivered a strong speech on May 5, 2026, during his party’s parliamentary group meeting at the Turkish Grand National Assembly, criticizing the government across a wide range of issues including the economy, taxation, foreign policy, and the judiciary.

Opening his remarks, Özel highlighted his party’s nationwide mobilization, stating that party organizations had launched fieldwork across all 81 provinces and 973 districts. He also referenced recent engagements with labor unions during the May 1st period, emphasizing an active grassroots campaign.

Focusing on the economy, Özel criticized the latest inflation figures, arguing that Turkey’s monthly inflation rate exceeds the annual inflation rates of many countries. Referring to official data showing annual inflation at around 32 percent, he noted that nearly the entire yearly target had been reached within just four months, calling it a sign of serious mismanagement.

Addressing wages and purchasing power, Özel stated that inflation has significantly eroded incomes. He pointed out that access to basic goods has become increasingly difficult within a short period, adding, “The public is not cursing—they are demanding solutions.”

Turning to taxation, Özel criticized the heavy reliance on indirect taxes, arguing that the burden disproportionately falls on low-income citizens. He claimed that the per capita tax burden over the next three years would reach approximately 558,000 Turkish lira, describing the system as fundamentally unfair.

Using car prices as an example, Özel argued that taxes often exceed the base cost of goods, further weakening citizens’ purchasing power.

He also delivered a sharp metaphor aimed at the government’s economic policies: “You are in the captain’s cabin, while the people are in the basement. This ship cannot sail like this—the captain must change.”

On foreign policy, Özel claimed that Turkey has become increasingly isolated internationally and has drifted away from a balanced, multi-dimensional diplomatic approach. He emphasized the importance of restoring stronger ties with the European Union and pursuing a more balanced foreign policy.

Özel also criticized the judiciary, alleging the existence of a “dual legal system” where different groups are treated unequally under the law.

In his closing remarks, he called on party members to intensify their efforts in the field, declaring: “You have risen—now the goal is power. There is no stopping.”

One of the most widely discussed lines from his speech was:
“Stop being marble in palaces; become soil so that roses may grow within you.”
