Abdullah Tırpan, 73, has died without being released from prison despite his grave health condition.
His leg had been amputated. He was admitted to intensive care and intubated. Yet calls for his release continued to go unanswered.
His family pleaded for him to be released. Members of parliament and human rights advocates also raised their voices. They called attention to his deteriorating health and demanded that he be allowed to spend his final days outside prison.
But the Forensic Medicine Institute concluded that he could remain behind bars.
And then came the statement attributed to Mehmet Uçum: “The European Court of Human Rights and Amor should know their limits.”
What are we supposed to make of all this? Where is justice when a seriously ill, elderly person cannot leave prison even as his condition worsens? Who bears responsibility when appeals for compassion and basic human dignity go unanswered?
Justice cannot be selective. Human rights cannot depend on who a person is, what they believe, or which side of the political divide they stand on. The right to life and human dignity must be protected for everyone.
Abdullah Tırpan is gone. But the questions surrounding his death remain. We must not allow them to disappear into silence.
Please leave a single dot beneath the video.
Let’s turn this small gesture into a lasting tradition, so that our hope can be renewed time and again.
Tomorrow, any one of us could be Abdullah Tırpan.
