KYRENIA, Northern Cyprus — A catamaran-type passenger vessel carrying 279 people sank approximately 2.5 kilometers off the coast of Kyrenia, according to initial reports.

The vessel, operated by Filo Denizcilik, was sailing off the Kyrenia coast when the captain reportedly noticed that the ship was taking on water from the stern. An attempt was made to turn the vessel back toward the coast, but the maneuver was unsuccessful and the ship eventually sank.

Following the incident, search and rescue operations were launched in the area. Coast Guard teams moved toward the vessel and began efforts to rescue passengers.

Several boats operating in the vicinity, as well as numerous vessels from the shoreline, were also seen heading toward the sinking ship to assist with the rescue operation.

Multiple ambulances were dispatched to the area as a precautionary measure.

Authorities have not yet released official information regarding the number of injured passengers or their medical conditions.

Search and rescue teams continue to operate in the area as efforts to account for and assist everyone aboard the vessel remain underway.
