At midday on the East River off East 23rd Street and FDR Drive in Manhattan, a Kodiak 100 seaplane made a hard landing, New York fire officials and the Federal Aviation Administration said, resulting in eight people being rescued and the aircraft being towed upright back to the dock.

Fire department units responded to reports of an aircraft down around 16:00 GMT and removed eight occupants from the seaplane. Two people sustained minor injuries and refused medical attention at the scene.

The FAA said the pilot “made a hard landing,” which caused a wing strut to snap. The agency also noted that air traffic control was not providing services to the aircraft at the time and will investigate the incident.

The seaplane was found upright and was towed back to the marina by fire officials. Authorities have not reported additional injuries or fatalities.

Three weeks earlier, another seaplane was damaged in the East River after a large wave struck a small two-seater as it attempted to take off on 13 June. The FAA did not link that prior event to the current occurrence.

Officials emphasized that the FAA will conduct a formal investigation into the circumstances of the hard landing and the snapped wing strut, and that more details will be released as they become available.
