Priest Killed, Four Injured in Knife Attack at Polish Benedictine Abbey

A priest was killed and four other people were injured in a knife attack at a Benedictine abbey in the southeastern Polish town of Jarosław on Thursday, authorities said.

Police detained a 31-year-old Ukrainian citizen at the scene shortly after the attack, which took place at the Benedictine Sisters’ monastery within the historic abbey complex. Prosecutors said the suspect had entered Poland from Germany earlier in the day.

Five people — four men and one woman — were attacked. Three of the victims were members of the clergy, according to prosecutors, while two were laypeople. One priest later died from his injuries, while two other victims were reported to be in critical condition.

The attack occurred at about 9:30 a.m. local time. Investigators said the suspect took a knife from the abbey’s kitchen before attacking people inside the complex. One of the priests was reportedly in a confessional when he was attacked.

Motive Remains Unknown

Polish prosecutors and police have not established a motive for the attack.

Investigators are working to reconstruct the sequence of events and determine why the suspect went to the abbey. Authorities have also been examining the circumstances surrounding his arrival in Poland and his movements before the stabbing.

The presence of the Ukrainian suspect has drawn attention because Jarosław is located roughly 30 kilometres from the Ukrainian border. However, authorities have not indicated that the attack was politically or religiously motivated.

Polish Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński said the suspect would face the full force of Polish law and that psychological assistance was being provided to people affected by the incident.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk also said the perpetrator would be punished under Polish law.

Zelensky Condemns the Attack

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the stabbing and said he was shocked by the violence.

Zelensky called for a thorough investigation and said the person responsible should face legal consequences. The Ukrainian embassy in Poland also condemned the attack, stressing that responsibility for the crime should be determined through the law rather than collective blame.

Polish President Karol Nawrocki likewise described the incident as deeply disturbing and called for a firm response from the authorities.

Local officials declared a period of mourning in Jarosław following the killing.

Investigation Underway

Police and prosecutors remain at the abbey complex as they collect evidence and interview witnesses.

The attack has caused shock in the southeastern Polish city, where the Benedictine complex includes religious facilities as well as educational and community spaces. People present at the site described scenes of panic immediately after the stabbing.

Authorities have not suggested that the incident was connected to broader political tensions between Poland and Ukraine.

The investigation will now focus on establishing the suspect’s motive, reconstructing the attack and determining whether he had any prior connection to the victims or the abbey.

The case comes amid heightened sensitivity surrounding relations between Poland and Ukraine, which have been closely linked since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine forced large numbers of Ukrainians to seek refuge in Poland. Any conclusions about the motive, however, remain subject to the ongoing investigation.
