Polish tourist bus overturns on M3 near Nyíregyháza, killing 12; authorities investigate cause and emergency response.
A Polish tourist bus veered off Hungary’s M3 motorway near Nyíregyháza at around 01:00 local time and overturned into a roadside ditch, killing twelve people and injuring dozens, authorities said.
Police reported the driver was believed to have fallen asleep at the wheel and has been taken into custody. The 24-tonne bus carried 57 passengers and two drivers; state media reported 35 passengers and both drivers were initially rescued by firefighters.
Emergency crews worked to lift the rear axle of the overturned vehicle to free people trapped underneath until cranes arrived to raise the entire bus, according to news agency MTI. Hungary’s ambulance service said one person suffered life-threatening injuries, nine had serious injuries and 37 sustained minor injuries.
