Hiker struck by lightning on Mount Etna dies; authorities investigate conditions and safety measures amid ongoing weather concerns.
An American tourist was struck by lightning on Mount Etna during a sudden thunderstorm and was declared dead after being flown to hospital.
The 30-year-old, not named by authorities, was found by firefighters and emergency services in cardiac arrest at about 20:00 local time (18:00 GMT) in a restricted area used to approach the summit. He was flown by helicopter to Cannizzaro Hospital in Catania and pronounced dead on arrival.
Recent eruptions at Europe’s most active volcano have limited access to upper slopes and drawn many visitors. Authorities have been restricting areas of Etna because of increased volcanic activity and the scarcity of shelter above the tree line.
Ash from recent eruptions has clouded the skies over eastern Sicily and disrupted hundreds of flights at Catania International Airport in the past week. An aviation alert was downgraded on Saturday from red to orange.
The incident highlights the combined hazard of volcanic activity and sudden weather changes on Mount Etna as stated by Italy’s civil protection agency. Emergency services located the tourist in a restricted higher-altitude area where conditions can become hazardous.
