Melania Trump receives Ukraine’s Order of Princess Olga following the Oleshky ceasefire, highlighting humanitarian support and diplomatic ties.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky awarded the Order of Princess Olga, 1st Class, to US First Lady Melania Trump for her significant personal contribution to humanitarian support for Ukraine, following a ceasefire that enabled evacuations from Oleshky in Kherson.
The White House stated that Melania Trump independently initiated engagement between the Russian and Ukrainian delegations and successfully secured a ceasefire. As a result, several hundred people were evacuated from the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky after the end of hostilities in the Kherson region.
Delegations from Russia and Ukraine, composed of ombudsmen and senior officials involved in the evacuation mission, were invited by Melania Trump to meet at the White House on Thursday. The visiting parties include Ukraine’s human rights ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets and his Russian counterpart Yana Lantratova, as well as Ukrainian MP Davyd Arakhamia and Russian official Kirill Dmitriev.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that the Russian delegation will consist of Yana Lantratova and Kirill Dmitriev. Davyd Arakhamia has been identified as a participant who previously maintained informal contact between the White House and Moscow during the ceasefire, and he confirmed his attendance for the talks.
No details about the White House event were provided. Dmytro Lubinets posted that there are important meetings ahead while traveling to the United States. Melania Trump is scheduled to deliver remarks on the Oleshky ceasefire at 11:00 local time, according to the White House website.
Zelensky’s decree also cited Melania Trump’s broader humanitarian efforts concerning Ukrainian children affected by the war as a reason for the Princess Olga award. In 2025 Melania Trump stated that an open channel of communication had been established with Russian President Vladimir Putin to facilitate the reunification of displaced Ukrainian children with their families.
The United Nations previously described the deportation and forcible transfer of Ukrainian children to Russia as constituting a crime against humanity and a war crime. Ukraine reports that almost 20,000 children have been illegally sent to Russia and Belarus since the 2022 full-scale invasion.
Representatives from Russia, Ukraine and the United States are also scheduled to meet in Abu Dhabi next week in the first trilateral meeting since February, focusing on postwar security agreements and de-escalation, according to US envoy Steve Witkoff.
The award to Melania Trump highlights a diplomatic initiative that the White House presented as independently brokered by the First Lady, framing her role as central to securing a temporary ceasefire and enabling evacuations from Oleshky. The planned meetings at the White House and the upcoming trilateral talks in Abu Dhabi indicate coordinated diplomatic activity involving ombudsmen and senior officials from Russia and Ukraine along with US facilitation.
The inclusion of humanitarian concerns, especially regarding Ukrainian children, in Zelensky’s decree underscores the humanitarian framing of the engagement and situates the ceasefire and subsequent talks within broader efforts to address wartime displacement and related international legal concerns.
