Liberal Party Leader Gülabi Questions Security Restrictions Before NATO Gathering

Liberal Party Chairman Zübeyir Gülabi delivered a comprehensive press statement ahead of the NATO gathering scheduled to take place in Ankara between July 6 and July 8, criticizing what he described as excessive security practices surrounding the event.

Referring to reports of barriers and visual screens placed along certain routes, Gülabi argued that such measures could not conceal the country’s underlying economic and social realities. According to him, governments should focus on solving problems such as inflation, unemployment, rising living costs, and declining public confidence rather than attempting to shield them from international visitors.

“A Strong State Is Measured by the Well-Being of Its Citizens”

Drawing on Türkiye’s historical state tradition, Gülabi emphasized that the strength of a nation should be judged by the prosperity and dignity of its people rather than by physical displays of power or prestige.

He maintained that public confidence grows through justice, transparency, accountability, and improved living standards instead of symbolic security measures.

Education and Teachers Highlighted

The Liberal Party leader also addressed challenges facing educators, arguing that teachers deserve greater respect and stronger economic support.

He said that governments should eliminate the financial difficulties experienced by education professionals instead of ignoring their concerns, stressing that investment in education remains one of the foundations of a prosperous society.

Call for Justice Beyond the Courtroom

Marking the observance of Muharram, Gülabi reflected on the legacy of Karbala, describing it as a lasting reminder of standing with justice rather than power.

He argued that justice should be reflected not only in judicial institutions but also in workplaces, schools, hospitals, and everyday public life, adding that political leadership should be guided by conscience instead of division.

Democracy and Rule of Law

Gülabi stated that Türkiye’s future depends on stronger democratic institutions, judicial independence, merit-based governance, and expanded individual freedoms.

According to him, sustainable investment and long-term economic growth can only flourish where legal certainty and the rule of law are firmly protected. He also reaffirmed that democratic elections remain the legitimate path for political change.

Criticism Over the Treatment of KHK Victims

Another major focus of the statement concerned individuals dismissed from public service under emergency decrees (KHK).

Gülabi questioned why legislative discussions reportedly addressing members of armed organizations did not also include legal remedies for citizens who, in his view, have experienced prolonged rights violations despite not engaging in violence.

He urged political leaders to support comprehensive legal solutions for those affected and emphasized that accountability should always be determined by independent courts operating under universal legal principles.

Remembering the Victims of Madımak

Toward the end of his remarks, Gülabi commemorated the victims of the Madımak massacre, honoring those who lost their lives on 2 July 1993.

He described remembrance as an essential part of defending democracy, freedom of expression, and justice, calling for a future in which similar tragedies are prevented through stronger democratic institutions.

Concluding his address, Gülabi expressed confidence that truth ultimately prevails over attempts to conceal reality, urging society to remain committed to democracy, justice, freedom, and national unity.
