Crypto markets hold steady as traders reduce risk ahead of U.S. CPI release, awaiting data that could sway prices and volatility.
Bitcoin traded near $83,450 in the European morning after a brief peak at $84,000 around 08:00 UTC, recovering from a low of $80,970 on Tuesday. Most altcoins lagged behind, with the CoinDesk 80 down 0.6% since midnight UTC while the CoinDesk 20 gained 0.2%, leaving nearly two-thirds of the CoinDesk 100 members in negative territory. CoinMarketCap’s Altcoin Season index retreated from 60 a week ago to 55.
Some market pressure eased after New York Fed President John Williams signaled no expectation for rate hikes in 2027, though he left open the possibility of another increase this year. Attention now turns to today’s U.S. consumer price index — the final inflation release before the Fed meets on Oct. 28. Economists surveyed by Dow Jones expect annual inflation to accelerate to 3.6% from 3.4%, while AAA reports U.S. gasoline averaging $4.34 per gallon versus $3.08 a year earlier. S&P 500 futures inched up about 0.2% and Brent crude hovered near $106 a barrel.
The futures market cooled considerably. Twenty-four-hour crypto futures volume dropped about 26% to $156.79 billion, while cumulative open interest (OI) fell roughly 2.3% to $140 billion. Liquidations plunged more than 80% to $136.32 million, suggesting reduced forced selling and a less-levered environment. The long–short taker volume ratio remains tilted toward shorts, which made up about 52% of flow.
Traders in Bitcoin and Ether are pulling risk off the table. Dollar-value OI for both BTC and ETH declined — roughly 3.5% and 2.7%, respectively — indicating positions are being closed rather than merely revalued. This movement of capital out of the largest coins is consistent with caution ahead of major economic data.
ZEC stands out as a destination for fresh capital. Its OI rose over 4% while spot gained about 1%, implying new contract creation beyond the price move. ZEC’s 24-hour OI-adjusted cumulative volume delta (CVD) is positive, and its annualized perpetual funding rates are near 10% — evidence that buyers are aggressive and longs are paying to maintain exposure. Canton Network’s CC token shows a comparable pattern.
Leverage appears to be rotating into smaller tokens. Over the past 30 days, OI in bitcoin and other major coins has eased while tokens like NEAR and Wormhole have seen sizable OI increases. That divergence points to speculative money seeking higher beta.
CVD highlights recent buying and selling pressure. BTC and TRX lead net buying in the past 24 hours, while UNI, SUI and NEAR show the largest negative CVDs among majors. NEAR is notable: rising OI amid heavy net selling could reflect an increasingly bearish structure as positions are built by sellers.
Implied volatility in bitcoin is on the rise. The 30-day Bitcoin implied volatility index (BVIV) has climbed to about 40% — above its 50- and 100-day averages — a common sign of increased caution. Ether’s implied volatility is up modestly as well.
Options desks are buying downside protection in BTC. In the last 24 hours, top BTC option trades skewed toward puts at the $60,000, $78,000 and $75,000 strikes. For ETH, active strikes included calls at $3,400 and $2,600 and a notable $2,300 put.
Optimism (OP) has given back some gains, slipping about 4.2% since midnight after earlier rallying to its highest level since mid-May. The prior advance followed Uniswap’s Unichain finishing its testnet migration to OP Enterprise on Oct. 13, with a mainnet migration slated for Oct. 29 under which Optimism will operate Unichain’s production infrastructure and sequencer.
DeFi remains the softest segment. The CoinDesk DeFi index (DFX) is down 1.8% since midnight. Liquid staking token LDO fell 2.9%, JTO declined 2.8% and UNI lost about 2.5%.
Some of last week’s top performers are now among the worst performers: Starknet (STRK) dropped roughly 4.5% since midnight, Kaia (KAIA) lost 3.8% and Celestia (TIA) eased about 3.7% after reaching a 2026 high near $0.63 on Saturday.
Leading gainers include smaller, thematic tokens. AI-agent payments token KITE rose about 5.3%, oracle token PYTH climbed 4.5% and privacy-focused AI platform token Venice (VVV) increased roughly 2.4%. Zcash (ZEC) also added about 1.7%.
