The crypto market plunged as fresh security concerns rattled traders, pushing major tokens lower while liquidations surged. Bitcoin slipped over 3% in 24 hours, briefly testing the mid-$76,000s, with ether, BNB, XRP and Solana also registering declines. Leveraged positions were hit hardest: market-wide liquidations reached about $1.5 billion, led by $468 million in bitcoin and $358 million in ether.

On Thursday, Binance disclosed a security incident that potentially affected roughly $6.3 billion in crypto, eclipsing prior large-scale breaches. Company posts suggest the suspected intrusion involved a compromised engineer’s laptop that enabled unauthorized withdrawals.

Immediate industry response and frozen assets

Stablecoin issuers and other market participants moved quickly to limit fallout. Tether said it had frozen over $1.567 billion in USDT tied to the incident. Circle reported more than $800 million in USDC frozen in cooperation with law enforcement. First Digital’s chief executive said FDUSD linked to the attack was frozen as well. These rapid freezes were intended to block movement of the suspected stolen funds and protect holders.

Some platforms felt direct impacts: decentralized betting site Polymarket halted international trading after attackers drained more than $2.6 million from user accounts.

Market outlook and structural implications

Standard Chartered’s Global Head of Digital Assets Research, Geoffrey Kendrick, warned the sell-off may not be over. He said prices and crypto-related stocks fell sharply following the Binance reports and suggested further downside until assets are unfrozen and the incident is fully investigated. Kendrick also argued the episode could accelerate a longer-term shift away from centralized exchanges.

He encouraged investors to consider decentralized venues, citing Uniswap’s resilience. Kendrick kept a long-term price target for UNI at $100 by 2030, suggesting the Binance breach might even increase the likelihood of that outcome as users and volume rotate toward DEXs.

Token performance and exceptions

Despite talk of a rotation to decentralization, most decentralized-exchange tokens tumbled with the broader market. Uniswap’s UNI fell more than 3% in 24 hours, and other DEX-related tokens such as Aster, PUMP, JUP and LIT also declined. One notable outlier was Hyperliquid’s HYPE, which surged about 15% after Intercontinental Exchange announced a partnership with Trade.xyz to bring Hyperliquid-powered perpetual futures to the U.S., pending regulatory approval.
