Data authorities warn over smart glasses privacy risks in the Islands

Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey data protection authorities have warned that discreet smart glasses can record conversations and personal information without people’s knowledge, urging users to be mindful and respectful when using the devices.

Officials said the wearable technology is increasingly used in workplaces and businesses. Paul Vane, Jersey Information Commissioner, acknowledged benefits but highlighted “considerable privacy risks” associated with the devices.

Dr Alexandra Delaney-Bhattacharya, Isle of Man Information Commissioner, noted smart glasses can “open up the world” for people with disabilities, while also saying the same features make them easy to misuse. She added that footage captured with a glance can end up beyond local jurisdictions.
