England beat Mexico as hundreds gather in Devon and Cornwall pubs

England defeated Mexico 3-2 in a World Cup last-16 match in Mexico City, with the delayed 02:00 BST kick-off and result confirmed by match reports on Monday; the game prompted hundreds of fans to gather in pubs across Devon and Cornwall in the early hours.

Kick-off was postponed from 01:00 to 02:00 BST because of heavy rain and lightning, but supporters still packed venues such as The Hyde Dendy in Paignton and the Brittania Inn in St Austell to watch Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane among the scorers.

About 300 people watched the match at The Hyde Dendy, where owner Xander Narvidge said he had brought in 20 extra staff to cope with the crowd and described a strong atmosphere despite the late finish past 04:00 BST.

At the Brittania Inn in St Austell roughly 350 fans attended, landlord Phil Lafferty calling it an “incredible evening” and noting that while 20 to 30 people left after the delay, most stayed to see the match through.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer had earlier announced that pubs could remain open until 05:00 BST, a move landlords said provided significant trade and financial benefit for their businesses.

Local supporters spoke of personal sacrifices to attend: Billy Martin said he booked the day off weeks earlier to watch England, while Charlie Rolfe planned to go to work at 06:00 after the match because he did not want to miss it.

The victory sends England into the quarter-finals, where they will face Norway on Saturday at 22:00 BST, a fixture that landlords expect will again draw large crowds and boost takings.
