RSPCA probes as two dogs are found dead in weighted bags in Bristol and Wrexham; investigations underway into these suspected animal cruelty cases.
The RSPCA reported that two dogs were found dead in bags weighed down with rocks or bricks in waterways, one near Whitchurch Lane in Bristol and another in the River Dee by the A534 bridge in Wrexham, on consecutive days this week.
RSPCA inspector Kimily Walters said she is investigating the incidents after a walker discovered a female lurcher puppy at the edge of a stream off Whitchurch Lane on Thursday. The inspector said she is concerned about how the puppy died and urged anyone with information to come forward.
The puppy, estimated at four to five months old, had no visible injuries, was not microchipped and wore no collar or tag. The walker who found her reported that the dog’s legs were trapped beneath a large rock, which appeared to have been placed to hold the body in position.
The following day, rescuers recovered a second dog from the River Dee in Wrexham. The animal, described by officers as a dark-coloured unneutered male possibly a pocket bully with a potentially docked tail, was inside a bag bearing a white Adidas logo and stripes near the A534 bridge.
That dog was microchipped but the chip was not registered; it was wearing a black collar. Animal rescue officer Melanie Froude said a member of the public pulled the bag from the water and, finding the dog’s body inside, alerted the police, who have asked the RSPCA to investigate.
Inspector Walters and rescue officers continue to seek information from the public about both cases. The RSPCA asked anyone with relevant details to contact its appeal line to assist the ongoing inquiries.
