A 39-year-old man was shot and killed on Kill Avenue in Dún Laoghaire at around 08:30 on Sunday, Gardaí said, and emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene.

The victim, named locally as Mark Cullen, was shot in the leg at Patrician Park and bled to death as people in the area proceeded to Mass, authorities and local accounts indicated.

Gardaí confirmed no arrests have been made and said investigators are examining all circumstances surrounding the killing.

One line of inquiry suggests Cullen may have been at a pre-arranged meeting and that the shooter did not intend to kill him, but Gardaí emphasized that all lines of inquiry remain open.

Local officials and residents described shock after the incident. Irish Labour Party councillor Thomas Joseph told RTÉ that people in the neighbourhood feel “shocked and scared” and that such violence is unprecedented in the community.

Resident Anthony Byrne said the shooting was unusual for the area and that he could not recall a similar event, reflecting local unease.

The shooting comes after a period in 2025 noted for having no fatal shootings in the Republic of Ireland for decades, a contrast authorities will consider as they continue their investigation.
