There is a saying among the people: “to poke a finger in a blind eye.” In essence, this expression perfectly describes what we have been experiencing.
For years, we have been watching the same cycle. The government continues on its chosen path, the opposition grows harsher, slogans are renewed, yet the core problems remain exactly where they are.
Justice, the rule of law, the economy, education, healthcare, corruption, trust…
Every newcomer says, “We will fix it,” and everyone who leaves says, “We were prevented from doing so.” Yet the outcome never changes.
As power becomes increasingly centralized on the government side, ears are closed to criticism; problems are either postponed or ignored. On the opposition side, criticism often takes precedence over solutions, while the production of viable alternatives remains weak.
As a result, society is condemned to live in an echo chamber, trapped between two sides.
Yet the real issue is not who governs the country. The real issue is how it is governed and with what mindset. Instead of discussing this, we are constantly forced to take sides.
And perhaps the saddest part of all is this: everyone can see the problems as clearly as if a finger were being poked into a blind eye, yet no one shows the courage for a genuine and fundamental reckoning with them. Or perhaps it simply does not serve their interests.
“I am not an old person with outdated ideas; whatever my age may be, my mind remains young and always open to accepting new things.”
The Mask and the Soul — Halide Edib Adıvar
