Three Lebanese Farmers Detained by Israeli Forces in Southern Lebanon

Three Lebanese farmers were detained after being summoned by phone to a location in the village of Halta in Hasbaya province, village leader Issa Abedelaal told the BBC, and they were subsequently taken away by Israeli forces.

The detentions occurred inside an area of roughly 600 sq km that Israel continues to occupy, according to the village leader. The cases were reported to the US-led International Monitoring and Implementation Mechanism, which oversees security coordination between Israel and Lebanon.

Hours later, Israel released another Lebanese civilian, Malek Ghazi, who was handed over to the Lebanese army by the International Committee of the Red Cross at the Naqoura crossing and transported to an army intelligence facility in Tyre for a medical examination. Ghazi’s family says he disappeared last October after leaving home to exercise.

Israel’s prime minister’s office said four other civilians due to be released had been questioned and found to have no links to armed groups, and Israel stated four additional Lebanese civilians would be released on Friday.

More than 30 Lebanese are still believed to be in Israeli custody as US-mediated talks between the two countries remain stalled over a framework addressing Hezbollah’s disarmament, Israeli withdrawal and deployment of the Lebanese army in the south. The negotiations include a mid-June framework envisioning disarmament, Lebanese army deployment and gradual Israeli withdrawal beginning with designated pilot zones, but progress has been limited amid disputes over verification and the Lebanese army’s role.
