Istanbul Municipality unveils professional flood prevention measures after heavy rainfall to protect residents and critical infrastructure.
The Istanbul Municipality announced on Monday that it has launched a set of flood prevention measures following heavy rainfall that affected the city the previous night, aiming to reduce immediate drainage blockages and prevent further disruptions.
According to the municipal statement, crews were dispatched across affected districts overnight to clear storm drains, remove debris from waterways and inspect critical infrastructure for damage.
Officials said priority work focused on low-lying neighborhoods and main arterial roads where water accumulation caused traffic slowdowns. Temporary pumps were installed at several points to accelerate drainage.
The municipality reported collaboration with emergency services and utility providers to monitor sewer systems and restore any interrupted services. Teams will continue assessments to identify locations needing long-term repairs.
Municipal engineers conducted inspections at key bridges and underpasses to ensure structural integrity after the high runoff. No structural failures were reported, but preventive closures and traffic diversions were implemented where water levels posed a risk.
Residents were advised in the statement to avoid walking or driving through flooded areas and to report clogged drains via the municipal hotline. Authorities reminded citizens to secure loose outdoor items that could block drainage channels.
The municipality said it will provide a detailed report on the interventions and any planned infrastructure investments in the coming days, as crews continue cleanup and monitoring operations across the city.
