Israeli strikes hit southern Lebanon town, killing one and wounding 12

An Israeli strike on a prayer hall roof in Tibnin, southern Lebanon, killed one person and injured 12, Lebanon’s health ministry reported, while the Israeli military said it was responding to a “blatant violation of the ceasefire.”

The strike struck the roof of a prayer hall at the cemetery in Tibnin, according to Lebanese media, and caused the casualties reported by the health ministry.

The Israeli military said it began carrying out precise strikes in southern Lebanon after issuing an evacuation order for Mansouri, where it had previously warned residents to leave ahead of “forceful action.” An Israeli source told local media that displaced residents had returned to Mansouri under the auspices of the Lebanese army, which the source said established a checkpoint in the area.

Mayor Haidar Madihli told local outlets that Israeli warplanes struck buildings and villas in the Ghazaleh neighbourhood on Mansouri’s outskirts, causing extensive structural damage and prompting families to flee toward Tyre. He said around 120 families had returned to Mansouri after the 19 June ceasefire, with only 40 to 50 families remaining recently.

The evacuation order for Mansouri was the first in southern Lebanon since 14 June, when residents of 29 towns and villages were told to leave. The Israeli military described the town as inside its declared 10km security zone along the border and said there was military activity endangering civilians.

The strikes came as Israeli and Lebanese officials attended US-sponsored talks in Rome aimed at maintaining the ceasefire established in late June under a trilateral framework intended to see Israeli withdrawal from occupied southern Lebanese territory in exchange for Hezbollah disarmament. The United Nations humanitarian office said more than 820,000 people displaced in Lebanon had begun returning to their home areas following a reduction in hostilities, while about 360,000 people remained displaced, including 26,000 in government shelters.
