Ann Widdecombe found seriously injured at her Devon home; suspect arrested in South Yorkshire

Former Conservative minister and Reform UK spokesperson Ann Widdecombe was discovered with serious injuries at her Haytor, Devon residence at 11:40 BST on Thursday, and police say a 28-year-old white British man has been arrested in South Yorkshire on suspicion of her murder.

Devon and Cornwall Police say they believe the attack occurred almost 24 hours before Widdecombe was found. The force confirmed the arrested suspect is now in custody following an operation supported by Counter Terrorism Policing North East and South Yorkshire Police.

Earlier, a 26-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of murder but was released on Saturday. The recent arrest took place at an address roughly 270 miles (430 km) from Widdecombe’s Devon property, the statement says.

Police emphasised there is no information at this time to suggest the incident is terrorism-related and that Devon and Cornwall Police retain primacy of the investigation. Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman said the priority remains identifying those responsible and ensuring all available evidence is examined.

Forensic teams were seen arriving at the property and a significant police presence remained in the area on Saturday. Widdecombe’s family have been informed of the latest development, authorities added.

Widdecombe’s public profile spans decades: she served as the Tory MP for Maidstone from 1987 to 2010, appeared on BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing in 2010 and was runner-up on Celebrity Big Brother in 2018. She was an MEP for South West England from 2019 to 2020 with the Brexit Party and in 2023 became Reform UK’s Immigration and Justice spokesperson.

Liberal News Analysis: What Does This Development Mean?

The arrest far from the crime scene underscores modern policing’s geographic reach and the role of multi-force collaboration in high-profile cases. Public attention on a well-known political figure raises questions about protective measures for former public servants and the investigative resources allocated to incidents involving prominent individuals.

Beyond the immediate criminal inquiry, the case may shape discussions about community safety perceptions in rural areas and the information demands of a 24-hour news cycle. Authorities’ careful messaging—ruling out terrorism and emphasizing evidence-gathering—aims to prevent speculation while the investigation continues.
