Five shot at Virginia State University; one critically injured — campus safety response, investigation underway and updates expected.
Five people were shot outside a Virginia State University residence hall early Saturday, the university said, with one victim in critical condition.
Officers responded to the scene at about 01:28 local time (05:28 GMT). All five individuals sustained gunshot wounds and were transported to local hospitals; four injuries were reported as not life-threatening.
The university said a temporary campus lockdown was lifted but a significant law enforcement presence remained on site. Chesterfield County Police are leading the investigation with assistance from other local and campus police. The BBC has contacted local police for comment.
Virginia State University, a historically Black university of about 5,000 students located just over 20 miles south of Richmond, had classes scheduled to begin on Monday, according to the university website.
