BBC reports England’s World Cup win over Mexico drew a peak UK audience of 9.1 million, highlighting strong national interest and viewing figures.
England’s dramatic victory over Mexico at the Azteca Stadium was watched by a peak UK audience of 9.1 million, the BBC said, after the match that included two goals from Jude Bellingham and secured England’s place in the World Cup quarter-finals.
The game kicked off at 02:00 BST and averaged 7.8 million viewers across BBC TV and BBC iPlayer, marking the largest live UK broadcast audience recorded between 02:00 and 04:00.
The BBC also reported it was the busiest day on record for its sport platforms, with 15 million unique visitors to the BBC Sport website and app and 330 million video views across its social channels.
Highlights and catch-up viewing were substantial: the BBC’s highlights were streamed 5.9 million times via BBC iPlayer, the BBC Sport site and app, and the BBC Football YouTube channel.
A re-run of the match on BBC Two from 07:10 attracted a peak audience of 1.1 million and averaged 900,000 viewers.
England will face Norway in the quarter-finals on Saturday at 22:00, with radio coverage on BBC Radio 5 Live. Norway reached the last eight after upsetting Brazil in the previous round, where Erling Haaland has scored seven tournament goals so far.
England are set to miss suspended Jarell Quansah and injured Jordan Henderson for the Norway match, while right-back Reece James is expected to be fit.
Earlier in the tournament, England’s group matches drew large audiences: the last-32 win over DR Congo at 17:00 remains the most-watched England game so far with a 16.3 million peak on the BBC. The Croatia opener (15.4m peak) and the Panama win (13.76m peak) aired on ITV, while the draw with Ghana had a 15.4 million peak on the BBC.
